Quai Vauban and Battant Bridge
Lined with its listed arcades, Quai Vauban runs along the Doubs opposite the colourful houses of the Battant district. The Battant Bridge takes you across the river to reach the lively cafés of this former wine-growers’ quarter. An early evening here, with the sunset reflecting on the façades, is often enough to set a gentle mood. Simple, bright, perfect for a first date without staging.
Chamars and Micaud promenades
To the south, the Chamars promenade, laid out in the eighteenth century, spreads a large park between the two arms of the river. Facing it, the nineteenth-century Micaud promenade lines century-old plane trees and lawns opposite the citadel. People run, picnic, read together. In winter, iced branches turn the place into a postcard, perfect for a hand-in-hand stroll followed by a hot chocolate.
Up to Fort Griffon and the Loue valley
To extend the walk, climb up to Fort Griffon for a more confidential view over the loop. An hour’s drive away, the Loue valley, dear to Courbet, adds waterfalls, cliffs and Comtois villages to your getaway ideas. On Lyad, Besançon singles share their favourite paths and cafés; it is up to you to decide the pace and direction of the next walk.
